Online Course Announcement

The Lancet Palestinian Health Alliance (LPHA) in collaboration with The Institute of Community and Public Health, Birzeit University (ICPH/BZU), The World Health Organization (WHO), and The United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA) are pleased to invite you to register to attend an online course on Research and Practice in Health and Human Rights. The online course will take place on 12, 13, 14 and 19, 20 October, 2020 from 9:00 am – 12:00 noon.  The course targets enthusiastic professionals working on the issue of human rights and health from various  disciplines and fields of practice.

Course objectives:

This course examines the intersection of health and human rights in theory and in practice.  Promotion and protection of human rights and promotion and protection of health are fundamentally linked Health policies and programs can promote respect, protection and promotion of human rights and human rights principles through their design and implementation; conversely, systemic or structural deficits can negatively impact human rights protections. Meanwhile, documentation of human rights violations and promoting accountability for effective protection and prevention of violations can be central to improving health outcomes, particularly where mortality and morbidity are closely linked to such violations.

Recognition of this inherent interconnectedness is at the core of the growing field of study and practice in health and human rights and informs the readings, lectures, and discussions of this course. The focus topics for lectures and discussions include: the establishment of the United Nations and international laws and conventions related to the right to health; the relationship between health and human rights in theory and practice; a conceptual framework for the right to health and determinants of the health; human rights violations and their health impact in  Palestine; sexual and reproductive health and rights; and global and local activism and litigation to promote health and human rights. The course will conclude with recommendations on practical ways forward to advocate effectively for the right to health in Palestine and next steps to build this initiative in the future.

At the conclusion of the course, participants will be able to understand and identify prevailing concepts and approaches to health and human rights in  Palestine and around the world, including the use of litigation and advocacy campaigns; and critically evaluate current approaches to address key public health challenges in the Palestine in relation to a human rights framework.
