Masters Program in Public Health

 

 Introduction

 
 


The Institute of Community and Public Health (ICPH) at Birzeit University currently offers the program of “Masters in Public Health” aiming to contribute to system building by upgrading and strengthening  the conceptual, methodological and practical capacity of Palestinian health human resources . The main objectives of the program are to emphasize on understanding health as a social construction, based on the broad determinants of health which is linked to social, political, and economic determinants, and not only from the perspective of the biomedical framework;  to highlight multi-sectoral collaboration as a corner stone to health system building; to develop a foundation of concepts necessary for rational and effective practice of public health, which is relevant to the needs and aspirations of the Palestinian community; and to equip the students with the analytical and technical research skills required to determine the health related problems, designing interventions and monitoring the results of these interventions.

In addition to the main program in public health, the Institute is also offering the opportunity for the students to focus on “Health Economics” through specific related courses aiming to strengthen the decision making, planning, financing and managerial capacity of human resources working in the health sector and related spheres.
 

 
 

 Admission Requirements

 
 

 

  1. A Bachelor degree from an accredited university with a minimum “good” standing. 

  2. A Bachelor specialty in general medicine, dentistry, nursing, one of the medical professions, or other specialties related to public health (such as statistics, engineering, environment, management, economics, education, sociology, or psychology)

  3. Sitting for an English proficiency examination

  4. Work experience in a field related to public health is preferred.

High Diploma Program in Primary Health Care

 
 

Introduction

 


The Institute of Community and Public Health (ICPH) at Birzeit University offers the program of “Diploma of Primary Health Care”. The program aims at training and orienting health professionals working within the primary health care sector to contribute to system building in health care, and unify the concepts and methods of work, among institution in dealing with the problems. In addition, this program equips the students with technical, analytical and administrative skills, in addition to communication and training skills.

Admission Requirements:

 

  1. A Bachelor degree from an accredited university with a minimum “good” standing. 

  2. A Bachelor specialty in general medicine, dentistry, nursing, one of the medical professions, or other specialties related to public health (such as statistics, engineering, environment, management, economics, education, sociology, or psychology)

 621 A Public Health Approach to Communicable and Non-communicable Diseases

Communicable and non-Communicable diseases that are of importance to Palestine. Social and psychological events that are of direct relation to public health, such as violence and disability, in addition to examining and understanding the relation between these events and disease occurrence, with special emphasis on prevention strategies.

622 Management of Resources in the Health System

Identification, planning and management of the various resources needed for health systems, including human, physical (infrastructure and equipment) and financial resources. Development and operation of effective and reliable health information systems. Presentation of potential models of best practice and challenges to successful implementation relevant to countries with scarese resources such as Palestine.

623 Classical Epidemiology

Distribution of the most common diseases in Palestine, spread of epidemics and pattern of occurrence. Emphasis is placed on quantitative methods using routinely collected and specialized data.

624 Social Epidemiology

The social, environmental and cultural contexts within which disease occurs. The use of anthropological methods for the collection of data for the purpose of understanding the health needs of a society and the means through which to fulfill those needs.

625 Advanced Classical and Social Epidemiology

The main epidemics and communicable diseases in Palestine, the integration and further development of the conceptual and methodological skills acquired in classical epidemiology and their application to the study of the Palestinian disease profile (Pre-Requisite: Classical Epidemiology 623).

626 Family Health

Health problems of individuals in the different stages of their life-cycles: childhood, adolescence, adulthood and old age. Emphasis is placed on the various lifestyles factors, such as nutrition, and their impact on public health.

627 Communication and Training Skills (I)

The theoretical and practical skills needed focusing on communication at the individual, group and societal level, especially in the Palestinian context.

 

628 Introductions to Environmental Health

Relationship between the environment and the individual health through linking the material, environmental, economic, social, cultural, behavioral, and biological determinants of disease. The importance of environmental conditions in improving the population's health.

629 Communication and Training Skills (II)

Developing communication as an instrument of administrative organization and training.  Development of skills in the area of planning for individual and collective programs, as well as report writing and administration of these programs. (Pre-Requisite: Communication and Training Skills (I) 627)

631 Primary Health Care

The history of development of primary health care worldwide, focusing on conceptual and practical aspects,the basic principles of primary care and their application within the Palestinian context. (Pre-Requisite: Social Epidemiology 624)

632 Health Planning and Management

Main problems entailed in planning and managing primary health care services at the local, regional and national levels Various tools to deal with such problems focusing on specific skills, such as planning, monitoring, evaluation, networking, time management, and record keeping.

633 Research Methods and Data Collection

Quantitative and qualitative research methods. Research design, experimental research and sampling methodology. Data collection including those pertaining to the clinic and the local community.

634 Health Statistics

Fundamental conceptual statistical principles and skills needed to deal with the problems of public health. The use of statistical methods and their role in assisting in the process of decision making and proper planning for health.

635 Health Policy and Planning

Different ways to develop health policies and plans. Different models and tools that are available internationally for the formulation of policies, follow up and evaluation of these policies. Different skills needed for effective and realistic planning of health projects. The role of health ethics in the process of policy formulation and planning (Pre-Requisite: Health Planning and Management 632 or teacher’s approval).

636 International Health Systems

Different methods utilized internationally to solve medical and health problems. Analyses of selected issues relevant or pressing and of importance in the international health debate. Utilize the different approaches to health system development and adapt those to the Palestinian context, in the process of reconstruction and rehabilitation of the health care system locally.

(BUSA636) Managerial Economics

Demand analysis, production, forecasting, cost analysis, market structure (pure competition, monopoly, monopolistic competition, and oligopoly), pricing policies, role of government in the market, decision-making under uncertainty, capital budget.

721 Health and Society

Linking the social sciences to the health sciences by focusing on the social aspects that have an impact on health, such as demographic and socio-economic changes, urbanization, life style changes, and income changes as well as social and family relations. Studying of the ways in which Palestinian society has developed, and the impact of this particular path of development on Palestinian Health (Pre-Requisite: Primary Health Care 631or parallel).

722 Gender and Health

Studying the social relationships between men and women and the status of women in society, as well as their health ramifications, especially in the domain of women’s health. The experience of the different health and women’s movements internationally, and it focuses on the Palestinian experience in health care provision as well as the health conditions of Palestinian women and their determinants in the local context (Pre-Requisite: Primary Health Care 631 or parallel).

723 Special Topics

A systematic and in-depth examination of advances and emerging issues in community and public health.

724 Health Financing Policies

Analyzing health systems and health care financing schemes, health care financing policies, goals of health care financing, health care financing and health systems performance, Patients/health professional/financing agent relation, money flow in the health care system, national health accounts, risk theory, health sector reform.(Pre requisite: Health Economics 733).

733 Health Economics

Health Economics tools and concepts and their applications in health care and health service delivery, health as economic commodity, characteristics of the health care market, demand and supply of health care, economics and decision-making in health care delivery, economic evaluation and allocation of scarce health care resources, cost analysis, cost-effectiveness analysis, cost-utility analysis, cost benefit analysis. (Pre requisite: Managerial Economics BUSA636).

734 Selected Topics

A systematic and in-depth review of research and developments on specific topics in community and public health.

735 Population and Development

Study of population data resources; population growth and its characteristics (age, sex and economic of population structure); factors associated with population growth (including economic, political, cultural and social factors); and population policies in the developed and developing countries in general with special focus on Palestine, using special computer software, the effects of population change on various aspects of development in general and on future planning in relation to family, gender, and reproductive health with a focus on different policies addressing population growth implemented in different countries in general with special emphasis on the Palestinian context.

830 Seminar in Public Health
