The Institute of Public and Community Health hosted Dr. Fadi Al-Atrash, the Chief Executive Officer of Augusta Victoria Hospital (AVH), on July 19, 2023 as part of the activities of the Palestine Social Medicine course. Dr. Al-Atrash delivered a lecture to the course students on "Access to Healthcare from the Perspective of Augusta Victoria Hospital." In his lecture, he discussed the services provided by AVH, the impact of the Wall, checkpoints, and the Israeli regulations on hospitals in Jerusalem in general and on AVH in particular. He also addressed the challenges related to medical transfers and the laws imposed by the Israeli occupation.
Following Dr. Al-Atrash’s lecture, the course students’ conducted a field visit to AVH on July 20, 2023 with the leadership of the Palestine Health and Human Rights program, including Dr. Weeam Hamoudeh, Dr. Yara Assi, Dr. David Mills, and Dr. Osama Tanous. This course comes as part of a partnership program between the Institute of Community and Public Health at Birzeit University and the François-Xavier Bagnoud Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University. The course comprises a group of 30 medical and health sciences students from Palestinian universities across the West Bank and Gaza Strip, as well as universities in the United States.
During this visit, Dr. Al-Atrash, the Chief Executive Officer of Augusta Victoria Hospital, and Dr. Hani Abdeen, the Chief Medical Director of the hospital, welcomed the course team, along with Ms. Sieglinde Weinbrenner, representative of the World Lutheran Federation in Jerusalem who all were pleased with the visit and the cooperation between AVH and the Institute of Public and Community Health.
As part of the visit, Dr. Khadra Salameh, a specialist in pediatric hematology and oncology, introduced the students to her work with cancer and kidney dialysis children patients, as well as the challenges they face as doctors and caregivers, especially accessing health care at the hospital and the availability of medications due to occupation policies. Ms. Lana Nasser Eddin, the chief of the community outreach program, also spoke about the hospital's community outreach programs and activities including awareness campaigns and mobile clinics.
The visit was concluded with a tour in the hospital's sections so students can learn more about the history of AVH and closely observe the services AVH provides, especially in the pediatric cancer and kidney dialysis sections. The coordination for the lecture and the visit was through the AVH public relations team represented by Ms. Ezdihar Shaheen.
استضاف معهد الصحة العامة والمجتمعية، ضمن نشاطات مساق الطب الاجتماعي، د. فادي الأطرش المدير لتنفيذي العام الدكتور لمستشفى الأوغستا فكتوريا - المطلع لإلقاء محاضرة لطلبة المساق حول "الوصول إلى الرعاية الصحية من منظور مستشفى أوغستا فيكتوريا" بتاريخ 19-7-2023 والتي تحدث فيها الأطرش عن الخدمات التي يقدمها المستشفى، تأثير الجدار والحواجز على خدمات المستشفيات في القدس بشكل عام ومستشفى لأوغستا فكتوريا بشكل خاص، هذا بالإضافة إلى التطرق إلى التحديات المتعلقة بالتحويلات الطبية والقوانين التي يفرضها الاحتلال والمتعلقة بموقع المستشفى في مدينة القدس.
عطفا على هذه المحاضرة، قام طلاب المساق بزيارة ميدانية لمستشفى الأوغستا فكتوريا يوم الخميس 20-7-2023 مع فريق برنامج فلسطين للصحة وحقوق الانسان: د. وئام حمودة، د. يارا عاصي، د. دافيد ميلز، د. أسامة طنوس. يأتي هذا المساق ضمن برنامج شراكة بين معهد الصحة العامة والمجتمعية في جامعة بيرزيت ومركز فرانسوا خافيير باغنود للصحة وحقوق الإنسان في جامعة هارفارد.
خلال هذه الزيارة، رحب كل من د. فادي الأطرش، مدير مستشفى الأوغستا فكتوريا، ود. هاني عابدين، المدير الطبي للمستشفى، بالإضافة إلى ممثلة الإتحاد اللوثري العالمي في القدس السيدة زينجلنده فاينبرينر، والذين أعربوا عن سعادتهم بهذه الزيارة والتعاون بين المستشفى ومعهد الصحة. يشارك في المساق مجموعة من ٣٠ طالب وطالبة طب ومهن صحية من جامعات فلسطينية مختلفة في الضفة الغربية وقطاع غزة إضافة إلى جامعات من الولايات المتحدة الامريكية.
وخلال الزيارة قامت الدكتورة خضرة سلامة، أخصائية دم وأورام الأطفال في المستشفى، بتعريف الطلاب على عملها مع مرضى السرطان وغسيل الكلى من الأطفال والتحديات التي يواجهونها كأطباء ومعالجين، خاصة تلك المتعلقة بالوصول إلى المستشفى أو توفر الأدوية بسبب سياسات الاحتلال. كما تحدثت لانا ناصر الدين، مديرة البرامج المجتمعية، عن برامج التواصل المجتمعي للمستشفى والتي تشمل حملات التوعية والعيادات المتنقلة. اختتمت الزيارة بجولة في أقسام المستشفى للاطلاع عن كثب عن آلية عمل المستشفى والخدمات التي يوفرها خاصة في قسمي سرطان الأطفال وغسيل الكلى. وتجدر الإشارة هنا إلى أن التنسيق لهذه المحاضرة والزيارة كان عن طريق فريق العلاقات العامة في لمستشفى ممثلا بالسيدة ازدهار شاهين.
