Shifting Ecosystems, Distorted Landscapes & “Slow” Violence

ICPH faculty and researchers, Dr Maysaa Nimer, Suzan Mitwalli, and Dr Weeam Hammoudeh took part in a panel co-sponsored by the Institute of Community and Public Health, Birzeit University, and the FXB Center for Health and Human Rights at Harvard University titled “Shifting Ecosystems, Distorted Landscapes & “Slow” Violence: An Eco-Social Discussion on Health & Environment in Palestine.” The panel explored the relationship of land, environment, and health in Palestine through application of eco-social theory to health and environment, settler colonialism as a determinant of health, the concept of “slow” violence, and historical trauma.

Dr Maysaa Nimer and Suzan Mitwalli presented a study entitled “Social and political determinants of health of Palestinian Agriculture Working Women in the Jordan Valley”, and Dr Weeam Hammoudeh presented a study entitled “Environment and Health in the Northwest Jerusalem Enclave.” Other presenters included Dr Osama Tanous and Rabea Ghabariah. The panel was moderated by Dr Yara Asi. The panel was organized as part of the Palestine Program for Health and Human Rights, a joint initiative at Harvard University and Birzeit Univesity.
